A couple of weeks ago, my friend and owner of Suburban Motor Sports asked me to review an item they sell: a helmet adorned with a crystal applique hummingbird design. It is not every day that I am asked to weigh in on the very niche industry of motor scooting apparel, but seeing as I dress people for a living, and that I am a proud former passenger of a bad-ass baby-blue Vespa scooter that my husband misses to this day, let’s give this a go:
Overall: From the picture, it looks like a solid-built helmet that will serve its primary function of providing the all-important brain-cushioning function well. The bird applique is in a nice bright color palette and will be noticeable when worn. The most important thing about this type of accessory is deciding whether or not it fits your individual style. If you like shine in your accessories, or have a thing or birds, or enjoy a girly detail on an otherwise masculine-looking piece, this may be the look for you.
What I Like About This: I like the idea of customizing a helmet for the ladies. More and more often, I see daring urban chicks hold their own on the road on a scooter, and I always think “Good for them! They look bad-ass”. I’d hate to think that these women don’t have the option of girly scooter accessories. The bird picture is not cheesy, where if it were something else made of glitter, like say a heart, or a Playboy bunny, I would attack it mercilessly for its cheese factor.
What I Dislike About This: In short, this would not be the look for me. I am not a glitter girl, I like minimalism and clean lines, so this look would not fit my overall style aesthetic. I would be drawn to a helmet in solid white or a red or a smart color-blocking pattern with a mod influence.
The Bottom Line: If your eye is drawn to this helmet and you like it as your first instinct, it may just be the helmet for you. If not, don’t feel bad, with the rise of scooters in Boston, you’re bound to find accessories you like!
