One of my favorite things about the summer is that you can wear a dress pretty much everyday. I love dresses because I always feel put together in one, and they make getting ready in the morning so easy. Throw on a dress, some accessories, cute flats, and you’re done. However, there is one caveat to my love of dresses in the summertime: too many women ignore the importance of slips under dresses (and skirts too for that matter). This summer season, while white dresses are especially popular, I think this is a particularly important problem to address.
Growing up, my mom would tell me I needed a slip under every dress, (which is more than a little extreme and not true) so maybe I’m a little hypersensitive to this problem. With that said, on any given summer day, I always see a handful of women that make me cringe and think, “Man, I can totally see through her dress. Didn’t her mom teach her about wearing slips?” I’m not saying you need to throw on a slip under every dress or skirt. I am well aware that this can be tricky. A dress that looks perfectly fine indoors can be a different story and completely see-though once you step outside into natural sunlight.
I recommend that when wearing most white dresses or those that have no lining, wearing a nude colored slip underneath. There’s really no reason not to. This is not something you need to splurge on. You can go to Target and pick up one for under $10 (Here you go). They add virtually no bulk. Most importantly, you won’t be showing everyone your goodies.
Many dresses do have some type of lining and don’t require a slip. However, it is still not ok wear bright colored underwear under these in most cases, especially if they are white or a light color. In this situation, I would recommend wearing a nude colored thong underneath. This is where I would splurge a little more. I personally prefer Hanky Panky or Cosabella lace thongs.
I understand that there is nothing glamorous or fun about wearing nude colored undergarments, but they certainly are practical. This summer, do yourself a favor and make sure you own both a nude colored skirt slip and nude colored underwear, preferably a thong. Most importantly, use common sense, it’s probably not ok to wear a black thong under your white linen dress. Don’t let it happen to you. If it does, pray that you don’t get caught in the rain.
