I am not a huge TV person, but there are a few shows that I will not miss. Glee is one of those shows. Not only is it full of great humor, fabulous music and one of the best casts ever assembled, but it also has some serious style. Lou Eyrich, the successful stylist who previously styled the FX series “Nip/Tuck” is responsible for the distinctive and humorous styling that complements the plot of the show so well. Let’s review a few of my favorite characters:
Rachel
Unmistakenly the best singer of the group – and not afraid to announce it at every chance she can get – she is the character that you love to hate and hate to love. Eyrich dresses her in cringe-worthy ensembles that, more often than not, include knee socks, peter pan collars, too-short pleated skirts and juvenile details such an animal motifs. Hilarious.
Emma
The sweet-as-pie guidance counselor with a serious crush on Glee teacher Will Schuester and a serious case of OCD is dressed in head-to-toe J Crew, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Anthropologie in perfect, matchy-matchy outfits of over-the-top preppiness. The looks are sickeningly sweet and match her personality perfectly. I especially appreciate that no detail is overlooked in her ensembles and that they are perfectly coordinated right down to the brooch, bracelet or
outerwear piece that accompanies the look – all that continue the matchy-matchy theme.
Will Schuester
The fearless leader of Glee’s New Directions looks like he stepped out of a J Crew catalogue…and I love it. He lives in denim, khakis and corduroys accompanied by plaid shirts, navy blazers, vests and ties. The occassional graphic tee makes an appearance during a more casual scene, but
he looks his best when he is layered up in prep meets woodsman gear, ripe for getting made fun of by his nemesis Sue Sylvester, the coach of the Cheerios – William McKinley High’s cheerleading squad.
Sue Sylvester
Sue – the mean-spirited coach of the Cheerios, whose ultimate goal is to take down Glee club – never wears anything other than Adidas tracksuits and matching sneakers. (Actually, I just read that the suits are actually custom-made because Actress Jane Lynch is so tall. And, they make five suits per episode!) In addition, Eyrich recently added a pretty stylish long, black, down puffer coat complete with three white stripes down the arm and Cheerleading horn on the chest.
I literally could go on and on…
Kurt, the loveable, gay former member of New Directions went from high-fashion looks to the most over-the-top prep-school uniform I have ever seen when he switched schools and the 3 cheerleaders in New Directions recently quit the squad and have left their cheerleading uniforms behind and started appearing in their own unique and perfectly styled looks…
So, if all the buzz about the music, the cast and the awards the show has been earning haven’t piqued your interest yet, hopefully the promise of great, purposeful, and character-enhancing fashion will. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
I can’t wait for Tuesday night!
