All Ears

I’m of the opinion that accessories are a crucial part of any outfit. Even if I am just running down to the corner store, I feel naked without a necklace or some rings on. It’s a little bit of a problem actually…

Over the past few years, statement rings have been my go-to pieces of jewelry. Although rings will always be my favorite, I’m starting to take a liking to earrings – but not just any earrings – long, dangly ones that graze the shoulders. I blame my new obsession on Edie Sedgwick. I have always found her fascinating, but after receiving a coffee table book filled with pictures of her for Christmas, I’ve been looking to her for style inspiration.

Edie was one of Andy Warhol’s muses in the mid-sixties. She dabbled in acting and modeling, but she became famous for her sense of style. Edie was an “it” girl of the 1960’s and helped popularized many looks during her time such as pairing black, opaque tights with super-mini skirts, cropped, bleached-blonde hair, and – my favorite – long earrings.

If you feel like trying out some Edie inspired, shoulder length earrings I would adhere to a few rules:
1.Go very light with the rest of your jewelry. I would recommend that you not wear a necklace. Maybe throw on a simple ring or bracelet, but that’s it.
2.Go with a simple, solid colored top or dress. If you’re wearing this type of earring, they should be the show-piece of your outfit. You don’t want them to compete with a complicated pattern.
3.Unless you have a pixie cut or some other form of short haircut, wear your hair up to show them off.

While browsing for my own shoulder-length earrings – found at Forever 21 (three pairs for $19.55!) – I also found some great pairs at Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Topshop that I would definitely recommend checking out.

Happy Shopping and Accessorizing!
