Taming the Big, Down Coat

I love my big, down coat. Not only do I LIVE in it this time of year when the days of alternating frigid cold, snow, sleet, wind and slush require it, but it is one of my best fashion finds ever. I bought the 100% goose down, 3/4 length black coat with (extremely convincing) faux-fur trimmed hood by Vince at Marshalls for less than 1/2 of the original retail price. Score!!

However, there are times – especially at this point in the winter when there is almost as much of the season in front of us as their is behind us – that I am sick of looking and feeling like the Michelin man.

My solution?? I have taken to belting my down coat with a large leather belt. Not only does the belt give me a little more shape in my pillowy piece of outerwear, but I have discovered that it keeps nasty drafts out as well.

Certainly, when I have one of my many chunky knit cardigans or sweater-dresses on, the belt doesn’t quite fit. But, when I have something lighter on underneath, the belt is a welcome and fashionable addition.

One warning though: Since the belt is not attached to the coat, this is not a look for a day of shopping or any other activity where you will be taking off and putting on the coat repeatedly. The belt will be annoying and you risk loosing it. But, If you are simply headed to work and back, try it out!! Basic neutrals are easiest, but try a colored belt for an unexpected splash
of color in the otherwise dismal landscape…
