Stylist
How long have you been working for Stilista and how did you get into styling?
I was hired in November 2008, so I have been with Stilista for almost two years now! I got into styling through my work as a makeup artist for Comcast. Often, I was asked to put together looks in addition to doing makeup. In fact, through a connection at Comcast, I was once asked to style a music video. I put together the looks for the band as well as the leading actors in the video. I also owned my own boutique at one time and I carried 18 different brands of denim. Through my work at the store with my customers, I became a bit of a denim expert. I can still look at a pair of jeans on a rack and instinctively know what kind of body type would look best in them.
Describe your styling philosophy.
I am all about what is flattering to your body. I am curvy and short – and I used to be heavier – so I have always been conscious about what flatters my body and am always on a quest for it.
All women want to look think in their clothes and I try to help them achieve that. Also, I focus on helping my clients look classic and timeless – with a few trends thrown in for fun. I can honestly say that I don’t have a great eye for what is edgy or trendy, but I know what is flattering and how to work with a woman’s figure. That is probably why I have had so much success with our plus-size clients!
Describe your style. How does it inform your work as a stylist?
I am a classics girl. I have to stick with tailored, structured pieces otherwise I look matronly. My work uniform is pencil skirts and oxfords. I also love a great sheath dress and love making it look modern with accessories.
Who is your favorite designer or what is your favorite label?
Diane von Furstenberg. And Halston! I love all things ’70’s and am so excited that it is back!
What is your favorite type of clothing? Do you prefer shoes, necklaces, t-shirts, denim, etc?
Jeans and a great pair of heels – you can never go wrong. I also love the color yellow and stripes.
What is your favorite season of clothing?
Fall. I think everyone associates fall with fashion. All of the fashion magazines are 500 pages thick and “back-to-school” shopping is in high gear. I love fall clothing because I love to layer. I love tailored blazers over everything. And sweaters. And knee-high boots. And turtlenecks – especially a black cashmere one. It just feels like anything goes in fall…
Describe your favorite outfit.
I hate everything in my closet right now but…I have been wearing this strapless aqua J crew dress a lot. I like to rough it up with a brown leather “man-ish” belt around the waist. It’s an easy outfit that can be casual or dressy and it just works in the hot weather.
Describe your dream outfit.
I have been on a quest for a yellow strapless dress for almost five years now. I am obsessed with the color yellow – canary yellow to be exact. I want the dress to be structured and fitted and I want it to end at the knee. But I need it in the right material – I don’t want a shiny satin. I have of a picture of it in my head, but I can’t seem to find it…
