Being trendy without being fashion road-kill...
06.06.10

Do you enjoy trying out the latest trends, but worried that you look like the revolving door of fashion? Here are a couple of tips that will allow you fashion freedom without leaving you looking like fashion road-kill...
1. Select age-appropriate trends.
Clothing and accessories - when well-chosen - have the power to make us look younger and even slimmer. However, this is done through proper proportion, fit and the correct selection of accessories, not by wearing clothing that someone 1/2 your age would wear. For example, a middle-aged woman should embrace the trend of mixing patterns in order to breathe new life into her classic ensemble, but should steer clear of the deconstruction trend which could easily make her look as though she is dressing like her teenage daughter.
2. Try out trends with a similarity to your basic style.
Unless you are trying to re-invent yourself entirely, pick a trend that is close to home. For example, if you love vintage, rock the '90's floral trend. If you are a bit of a tomboy, embrace the "dress like your boyfriend" trend and throw on some baggy jeans, a deep v-neck tee and a fedora. This way, you will look fresh and new, but will still look like yourself.
3. Don't try every trend, every season.
Instead, select 1-2 of your favorites. Aside from being expensive, trying out all of the trends will make you look and feel like you have very little fashion confidence or true sense of self and the outfits will become more costume than clothing.
4. Select trends that work with your lifestyle.
If it isn't functional, then chances are you won't wear it. For example, if you are a mom with young kids, then the nude trend of the season is not for you. Instead, select items from the work-wear trend such as easy-to-wash denim and army green cargo pants that won't show stains as easily and can stand up to the wear-and-tear of the playground.
If you keep these four rules in mind, you should be able to explore new fashion frontiers with confidence. Still not sure? Give us a call! A Stilista stylist would be more than happy to help you navigate the tricky world of trends.
Hope to hear from you soon!
