This one's for the men out there-  There are all sorts of crazy pant trends for men in Spring 2010.  Probably taking a page from the women's highly popular "boyfriend" jean and paperbag skirts from the past few seasons, some designers have tried to translate these features into menswear.  Personally, I love this look and am looking forward to seeing some fashion-forward gents who will go ahead and try them this season.  I hope they use Rag & Bone and Michael Bastien's shows as foundations for their Spring wardrobe- unexpected volume, bright bottoms paired with sleek tops and exposed ankles.

HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER, for the majority of the population who have real lives that don't include hipster bars, runways or fronting a rock band, these looks are best left on the hanger.  The cuffed pants break all the style rules- they shorten the leg making you look short and stumpy.  They also expose the ankle which is really only ever recommended when you are actually wearing shorts.  I won't even get into how impossible it will be to get taken seriously at the office if you roll up the cuffs on your suit pants like Mr. Model #3 above!  As for the paper bag waisted pants in the first image, no.  Just no.  Don't do it unless you were hoping to add 15 pounds to your waistline and look like you borrowed your pants from Humpty Dumpty!

Just stick to the classic straight leg pant without any front pleats and experiment with Spring 2010 trend's in other ways- like layer two tees to show interesting lengths or add an unexpected sock color (deep purple, blue or green!)

Good luck out there, give us a call for even more style advice!

  1. Actually, as the weeks pass, I am seeing hoards of young men rolling up the cuff on their jeans and wearing boots! I am really starting to love this look- on men of all heights (even though technically cuffed pants tend to make you look shorter)! I think the key is to wear straight and slim fit jeans, pair them with a work boot and have lots of confidence and just the right amount of woodsy-male gruffness!
