Hats - My New Fashion Obsession
01.10.10

After many years of refusing to wear hats except under the most dire cold weather conditions - a hold over I am sure from when I had pixie-short hair and hats made me feel like a boy - I
have started to wear them...and to love them!
I purchased 3 hats - all in the "floppy beret style" shown above on Rachel Bilson - in 3 different neutral colors. Once I started wearing them, I quickly discovered that there were not only a
stylish way to add interest to my outfit, but they were also a quick and easy way to style my hair. Here are my hat-wearing tips:
1. Instead of placing the hat on or over your forehead, set it back from your hairline a few inches. This will give you the opportunity to style the front portion of your hair in order to enhance the look and up the fashion ante.
2. A side part with a dramatic sideswept bang looks great or your can part your hair in the center in order to frame the face. Leave your hair hanging or tuck the ends under the hat and secure them with bobby pins in order to keep them out of your way.
3. The rest of your hair can be tucked into the hat or left hanging out the back. I prefer my hair out. I either let it hang or twist it into a bun at the base of my neck.
4. Secure the hat to your head at various points with bobby pins in order to ensure that your style will last for the whole day.
The result? A cute, modern and stylish hair-do that required very little fuss since most of your hair is hidden under your hat! Also, the extra layer will keep you toasty warm during these chilly days.
Want to try it for yourself? Head to H&M for a cheap hat - most of them are $10 or under - and follow the rules above.
