Last Minute Holiday Outfits!

11.26.09

Turkey is roasting, potatoes are mashed and company is coming, but you have nothing to wear!  Here are some last minute outfit ideas that you can pull together from your closet today to help you get dressed for the holiday in a pinch!

Gents

- Instead of wearing your plain old white button up, try mixing a colored or printed button up shirt with one of your striped or argyle sweaters.  To dress it up even more, toss on a contrasting patterned tie and wear underneath the sweater.  Mixing is easy as long as you keep the colors in the same family and ground them with neutrals- black, brown, blue and gray are all neutrals and can all be worn together anytime.

- Even though jeans might be acceptable, spruce them up by wearing a sports coat or better yet, forgo them altogether and pair your sweater combo with your suiting pants.

- If you have a flannel buffalo plaid or similar "weekend" shirt, try pairing that under one of your solid color v-neck sweaters and a pair of flat front dark slacks.  It's a great mix and a modern twist on the classic plaid workshirt.

- Throw on a colorful suiting dress or basic tweed skirt but belt it with a skinny leopard print or other colorful belt.   Dress up your look even more by adding multiple strands of necklaces or chunky bracelets (just stack a few that you already have- it's ok to be off-beat and mix different metals and colors!

- Try adding a pair of black tights instead of nude colored hose for a modern gamine twist (pairing black tights with black heels will really elongate your legs).

- Layer one of your patterned button up work shirts under a sweater instead of a plain cotton tee.  Let it peek out from the bottom or at the cuff to add a pop of color.

- If none of your skirts are perfect, try throwing a sweater on over a dress to create the illusion of a two-piece outfit.  This is an especially great way to to get more wear out of your LBD (little black dress) this holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving from Stilista- hope your day is full of love and style!
