Leggings are STILL not pants.
10.18.09

Back in June I blogged about the pitfalls of leggings in THIS blog entry. I am still a firm believer in the fact that leggings are NOT pants, but I felt the need to revisit the topic in the face of this season's plethora of slim-fit, stretch bottoms that are blurring the lines between leggings and pants.
Traditional leggings - those heavy-weight footless tights with elastic waists - are NOT pants. They MUST be worn with tops, sweaters and/or dresses that cover atleast 3/4 of your bum.
However, the legging-like slim-fit pants and jeans that are hanging on the racks at almost every retail store this Fall, CAN be worn as pants. These legging-pant hybrids are thicker - and therefore never see-through - and have zip and button closures like their more traditional counterparts. Also, most of the pairs that I have seen have patch, button or zip pockets that are just aching to be shown off.
My favorite slim-fit pants have a slightly higher rise with interesting pocket details that invite you to tuck a sexy top into them and fully exploit their leg-lengthening effects. Wear them with heels for a night out or ballet flats or over-the-knee boots for day. Play up their bad-girl vibe with a shrunken leather jacket or studded jewelry or girl-ify them with lace, ruffles and pearls.
Hopefully, this entry has not only helped in clarifying this potential fashion downfall, but has also opened up some new fashion frontiers for your Fall and Winter wardrobe. Go forth and explore! But, please, don't forget that...
Leggings are NOT pants. Leggings are NOT pants. Leggings are NOT pants.
