Boston Fashion Week Blog 2009: Unzipped

Event #5: Unzipped screening, 6-7:30pm, Boston Public Library

I want to say that this movie was inspiring and exciting, but actually it really just stressed me out. Maybe it reminded me (on a much larger scale) of the stress of designing and developing at Adidas, but mostly it got on my nerves because over two-thirds of the movie was shot in black and white. The only color shots were these brief seconds at the end of the film during the runway finale. I understand Douglas Keeve wanted to build suspense and focus on the story line rather than the actual designs themselves, but this is FASHION and a FASHION documentary! I want to see patterns and textures and color and joy, not a bleak b/w montage of a designer ranting about his struggles.

It was really cool to see a movie at the public library for free and there were a few other fashion week observers around me; but I must say, it was mostly a bunch of snoring, sleeping folks coming in from the rain and taking advantage of a dark room and cushioned seats! A note for next year- definitely keep showing fashion films during the week, but try hosting them at bars where we can dress up, drink cocktails and then discuss the film when its over!
