A Fashion Rule to Hang Onto....

I am usually happy to see a fashion "rule" fall.

I enjoy wearing white before Memorial Day and after Labor Day and I am happy to mix brown and black and navy and black - none of which my mother's generation would not have felt comfortable doing. Fashion should be about self expression and too many rules limits your ability to express yourself.

However, their is one fashion "rule" that I think should remain intact: A guest should not wear white (or cream, or bone, or ivory) to a wedding.

I attended my college girlfirend's nuptials yesterday and was shocked to see numerous guests in white, cream, bone, AND ivory. Thankfully, she is a very easy-going gal and didn't let it bother her.

Your wedding day is the one day that is all about you. It is your "special day" and you should be the center of attention. If you choose a traditional wedding and a traditional dress, the bride is dressed in white (or cream, or bone, or ivory) and should stand out amongst the crowd of guests dressed in colors and darker neutrals.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think that this is one to hang onto. Think about it this way: When the fashion rules that I referenced above were still in style, following them was mostly about presenting yourself in the correct manner. Following them was in essence a selfish act; self-preservation in a social, fashion-conscious setting. In contrast, refraining from wearing white (or cream, or bone, or ivory) to a wedding is a more self-less endeavor. You are helping to ensure that the bride has her moment and is unique among her guests.

So, the next time that you are tempted to wear that gorgeous white (or cream, or bone, or ivory) dress to a wedding, remind yourself of this age-old fashion rule. There will, of course, be another occasion - a bridal shower, a baby shower, a date, a cocktail party, a New Year's party - where you can wear that dress. And, if you have absolutely nothing else to wear, then you now have an excuse to go shopping!
