A Day At the Races

I have been spending this month on the sunny West Coast and was lucky enough to attend the legendary horse races at Del Mar Race Track in San Diego, CA this weekend.  Historically, racetrack fashion is daytime formal, men wear suits and women wear day dresses and heels, and of course, everyone wears hats.  After sipping a bloody mary and placing my bets on the horses, I started looking around and taking in the style.  There was a wide range of looks milling about, from a few "Desperate Housewives" outfits- too tight and too revealing dresses on too high teetering heels countered by the super casual So-Cal mom shorts and flip-flops.  Speaking of flip-flops, I got into a discussion with my box-mate about the men who were spiffy from ankle up in tailored suits matched with creamy colored shirts and cute, vintage ties...except instead of wearing them with classic wing tip shoes...they were wearing flip-flops!  My friend insisted that this look was sloppy and unkempt, totally faux pas.  Now as a stylist, I wouldn't recommend flip flops with suits on men at the Kentucky Derby, or anywhere 5 miles away from the Pacific Ocean, but on this particular day, I loved the California cool of sandals mixed with retro vintage suits.  What do you guys think of the men in suits with flip-flop look?
