Vacation Style No-No or the story of the Cape Cod Sweatshirt

So I was vacationing at the Cape last week, and I determined that: a. The Cape does not offer a lot of great apparel shopping and b. The Cape DOES offer a vast variety of places to purchase your Cape Cod t-shirt, sweatshirt, shorts, etc. This got me thinking: what is it with the need to procure and wear a low-quality, ill-fitting garment that is mass-produced and flatters no one? I know what you are going to say: it’s for gifts / my kids / to remember the trip, etc. , my response to which would be:

1. A better gift would be local jewelry, or art print or even your very own scenery photo (framed, of course). Otherwise, you are encouraging someone to wear something dumpy and unexciting.

2. Totally get it about the kids, they enjoy that sort of thing, and what else is childhood for if it isn’t to wear apparel that screams loud and clear where we spent our summer on the first day of school?

3. You will remember this trip through the pictures that you took while out and about in cute vacation clothes you shopped for in your pre-vacation excitement.

As far as where to browse worthwhile garments while at the Cape, I’d suggest P-town boutiques for everything from sun dresses to leather, and some great local and vintage jewelry, Weekend boutique in Orleans, and Midsummer Nights shop in Chatham. Have more suggestions for the Cape or the islands? Do comment!
