Designer Consignment Shopping: a Recessionista's Best Friend

I am a huge fan of designer consignment shopping. I am a bit biased since I work for Second Time Around – one of the best, if not THE best, consignment shop in Boston – but I was a true believer in designer consignment shopping before I was gainfully employed by them.

Basically, it is the best of both worlds: the quality and high fashion that you can expect from the high-end labels and designers that you love at an affordable price. Of course, there is a little bit of work involved, but in my mind that work simply makes the result that much sweeter.

The best way to shop consignment is to hit up your local store on a regular basis. This way you will always be up-to-date on their inventory and you won’t miss out on those great mfinds. Also, Please leave time for some digging. Most consignment stores are bursting with inventory and mix everything together. But, if you give yourself a few minutes to rummage around, I promise that you will not be disappointed. Finally, here is an insider tip: Make friends with the staff. An employee or, better yet, the manager of a consignment shop knows where everything is. If he or she knows what you like they can pluck it from a rack like pulling a rabbit from a hat. Also, if you are a proven loyal customer, sometimes you will even get a phone call notifying you of your coveted item’s arrival.

On the flip side, you can also become a consignor. Have some clothing that you don’t wear? I know that you do, because everyone does! Instead of just throwing it out, set up an appointment to bring it in to your local consignment store. If accepted, the store will sell it for you and you will recieve a portion of the proceeds. Often, you can use your earnings as store credit. If that is your choice, you have basically traded clothing that you don’t want for clothing that you do with no damage done to your wallet.

Still feel overwhelmed? Book a shopping trip with Stilista! We are always willing to lend a hand!
