Simplify- that is my motto after my recent cleaning frenzy this past week. All this rain and dampness has kept me indoors surrounded by my piles, half-finished projects and incomplete wardrobe. I have too many ill fitting shoes (I can’t resist buying vintage shoes even though they are one size too small), too many pairs of mismatched socks, too many out of date pants and skirts, and definitely too many black elastic hair ties that just end up on the floor and get vacuumed away. I began thinking of our ancestors who crossed the Atlantic and the Oregon Trail- they were able to pack everything they owned into a covered wagon or steamer trunk! What has happened to us!? Given these economic times (the result of years of excess), I decided that I need to cut out the surplus in my life and live more simply.
To further my inspiration for this newfound simplicity, I am checking out The Uniform Project everyday. This is a fantastic experiment by Sheena Matheiken. She is making a social and artistic statement on sustainable fashion by wearing one dress for an entire year- creating new outfits only with accessories. She started in May and will continue for 365 days layering, mixing and coordinating all sorts of combinations for new looks. All of her proceeds go toward a charity that funds education in India. It is an inspiration to all of us hoping to minimize our clutter and still make and individual and ever-changing fashion statement!
