A Few Good Bags.

A recent stroll down Newbury Street confirmed what I’ve suspected for a long time now – Boston loooooves monogram bags. While I understand that certain bags are classics (LV Speedy, for one) and others are status symbols (a Chanel is recognizable from a mile away), I fail to see the mass appeal of monogram canvas in all shapes and sizes.

In my book, a “good bag” has a design that’s interesting without being too flashy; killer leather; and is user-friendly and appropriate in a variety of situations (work, after-work drinks, morning after the after-work drinks…). I also believe wholeheartedly that a handbag can be the single most expensive part of the outfit (shoes being a close second). Accessories pull an outfit together. Handbags are generally carried more often than any piece of clothing is worn.

Lastly, Boston has no shortage of boutiques that carry lesser-known handbag designers. So – here are some of my picks that don’t include and interlocking letters – and most are available in the Boston area or online.

First up is the Mid-City tote by Anna Corinna. I love the color on this one! Such a punchy vibrant purple to add some oomph to a neutral-colored outfit. If purple isn’t your thing, this bag is available in a gazillion colors and several sizes – from a small handbag to a weekender size.I like the many carrying options – by the handles, on the shoulder, or folded over and using the strap. Available online at www.winknyc.com and at Luna Boston

Rebecca Minkoff is hardly a well-kept secret, but is still fairly under-the-radar in the Boston area. My favorite style is called the “Morning After” bag. I dig her retro design, amazing leather (in fact the leather variations on her bags just about ensure that your bag is one-of-a-kind!), chunky hardware, and adorable fabrics that she uses for her linings. Sold at www.revolveclothing.com and also at Luna Boston.

Another favorite of mine is Hayden-Harnett. Although I particularly love their all-leather designs, I couldn’t resist the “Pamela” model – with all the colors, this is a fantastic pick for the summer! Available on www.haydenharnett.com – and a selection of their bags is available at Moxie in Beacon Hill.

And for rainy days much like we’ve had for the past week, Longchamp makes their Pliage tote. Again, a rainbow of colors (to complement your umbrella or wellies), accented with the rich brown signature leather. Another perk is that this tote folds up into a little rectangle, so you can carry it in any other of your fabulous bags – just in case it starts raining, or if you pick up groceries on the way home. What a green way to be stylish! (available at the Longchamp boutique on Newbury St)
