I have been sucked in by the boyfriend jean trend and am loving it. Not only are they incredibly comfortable, but they also offer a new outlet both for playing with proportions and for the juxtaposition of the masculine and the feminine.
I think that they are at their best in a medium blue, distressed wash. I am also partial to a small rip, tear or frayed hem which adds to their authenticity. After all, they are called “boyfriend” jeans because it is supposed to look like you borrowed your boyfriend’s favorite broken-in pair.
Wear them low-slung with a messily cuffed hem. Make a sharp contrast of the masculine and the feminine with a fitted, flirty top. Or, continue with the masculine theme by pairing them with plaid shirt, grandpa cardigan or blazer. However, if you go for the masculine look, be sure to let a hint of your femininity shine through either with a fitted tank, a princess sleeve or a strategically placed ruffle so as to not look too androgynous. The examples below are from www.shopbop.com and successfully translate the trend:

As far as shoes are concerned, I like them paired with a simple ballet flat, canvas sneaker or sandal in a casual setting. If you are wearing them out at night, bondage heels can give you a bit of a bad-girl vibe or a wedge sandal can lend a some hippie-chic undertones.
For those of you who can afford it, Current/Elliot has perfected the boyfriend jean. They offer them in full-length, crop and short styles. Check out National Jean Company to peruse their selection and to cash in on some great deals! Thankfully, if you can’t spring for the designer denim version, a trip to your local Goodwill or vintage shop should yield a great pair of boyfriend jeans at a recessionista-friendly price.
So, give boyfriend jeans a try this summer and revel in the comfort and airy-ness that very few denim trends offer!
