Just like Jessica, I also had summer fashion trends on my mind this week. I was compiling a list of the Top Ten Summer Must-haves for another blog that I write for and it got me to thinking about the summer trends “Do’s” and “Don’ts” of 2009. Following are my conclusions:
Spring 2009 Trend “Don’ts”:
1. Harem Pants
Does this really need an explanation??? The droopy-drawer look is flattering on, well…no one. I think that MC Hammer may be the only person in the history of fashion to have successfully warn harem pants. And even then, I use the word “successfully” very lightly. Lowering your crotch only shortens your leg-line and makes you look like you have something unsavory inside your pants.

2. Silk Pajama-inspired Pants
It seems as though pants got the short end of the fashion stick this season. These pajama-inspired pants look like – surprise! – pajamas and therefore seem a little out of place in most day-time and public settings. I think that pajamas should remain in lougewear settings unless you are Hugh Heffner in which case you can do whatever you want.

Now that you know what to steer clear of, let’s move on to the fun stuff…
Spring 2009 Trends “Do’s”
1. Feminine Florals
Beautiful, delicate floral patterns abound this season. They are best suited for flirty tops and flowy frocks, but I have also seen them on bags, scarves and even shoes. I am partial to a tiny rose pattern, but really any will do. You can emphasize the feminine throughout the entire outfit or you can combine a girly top with boyfriend jeans to create an interesting juxtaposition of genders.

2. Neon Colors
Jessica did a great job outlining the merits of bright colors, even going so far as to select some easy pieces that anyone can add to their wardrobe. So, I am off the hook except to say that I agree with her wholeheartedly. Wear color people! After all, this is New England and we wear neutrals almost nine months out of the year. Take the opportunity to shake things up during the three short months of summer.

3. Tribal Patterns
These geomoetric prints with African and Caribbean roots are both bold and eye-catching. They are best done in rich, earthy colors like chocolates browns, mustard yellows, shades of rust, and deep greens and blues. Pair them with neutrals – especially khaki – for a safari-smart ensemble. Also, don’t be afraid to add some complementary jewelry – long necklaces, bangles and big rings – with similar ethnic origins.

4. Rompers
I have truly saved the best for last. A complete dress fanatic, I have always been a fan of the one-piece outfit. Rompers have opened up a whole new world of options. As functional as they are fashionable, rompers create a sexy and retro look for both day and night.

With these guidelines in hand, feel free to be adventurous this summer! Try your favorite of the four trends above or head to H&M, Target, or any other haven for cheap, disposable fashion, and try all four! You will be sure to turn heads!
