One of my favorite trends for this summer is neon. This comes as no surprise to anyone who knows me – after all, I wear a canary yellow wool trench coat in the winter – but I recognize that for many, the concept of neon invokes horrible 80′s flashbacks. Rest assured, this trend has been updated and will NOT make you look as if you are shooting a remake of a Devo video.
Of the neon choices, orange is hands-down my favorite. Warm and flattering (YES, flattering – trust me!), it is the essence of summer. The best way to wear it is to pair it with a neutral, such as tan, white or navy (no black, please, we’re not going for a jack o’lantern look here). I especially love the combination of orange and grey, something about it is just so fresh and modern. Today, I have this skirt on, paired with a crisp white button-down blouse, wide belt, and sexy slingback heels:

For those of you who are still a little too afraid to go with such a bold color, you can still inject a shot of it into your wardrobe with accessories. These orange heels can take any outfit from ho-hum to WOW:

Look how this belt adds interest to a simple navy and white striped dress:

This orange satchel from Boden is also a great way to add a little punch to your outfit. Believe it or not, you can actually use this bag everyday – the solid color and simple shape make it work almost as a neutral. As long as your outfit isn’t too heavy on other brights, it will work with a lot of your basics and freshen up your look.

So don’t be shy – go ahead and give it a try! You’ll be surprised by how much you love it.
