Wardrobe "Must Haves"

I watched the new Bravo reality show, The Fashion Show, the other night. It’s kind of like Project Runway, but the designers put on a fashion show for industry insiders at the end of the show, and the insiders vote on their favorite looks. For the first major task, the designers were divided into three groups, and each group had to design a “must have” item, then the individual designers on the team had to design a look that would incorporate the must have item. I was really interested to see what they came up with, and I and the judges thought they failed miserably. The three items were a pair of harem pants, a reversible pencil skirt that was way too tight, and a bolero jacket.

This got me thinking about what my must have items are, and I think mine are much simpler, much more versatile, and very basic. These are pieces that can be styled into almost any look and can be worn year round, year after year.

I love a classic pair of lightweight wool black pants. They can be dressed up, dressed down, worn to work, and worn for a night out. Find a style that fits you well without too many details.

I also love a lightweight cardigan. They can be worn casually with a tank and a pair of jeans, dressed up for work buttoned up and belted over a pencil skirt, or dressed up over a fancy top worn open and belted. Check out the previous post for belt ideas.

And last, but not least, I suggest a trench coat. A true classic style will always work, but I love some of the new twists that we’ve been seeing in trenches. The assymetric hem and exagerated collar on this trench make it special. The neutral color allows it to be worn casually, for work, and in dressier situations.
