As a change of pace this week, I would like to take a departure from offering fashion advice and, instead, give a quick review of a fabulous fashion ocumentary that I recently saw. Valentino: The Last Emperor is currently showing at Coolidge Corner Theater. This phenomenal film chronicles the last two years of Valentino Garavani’s career as head designer at the fashion house that bears his name.
It offers an unparalleled view of the inner workings of a modern fashion house. The viewer is privy to both the fascinating design process of a traditional couturier as well as the politics involved in being owned and operated by a powerful parent company.
I was entranced by the images of Valentino sketching lavish gowns in a mere matter of seconds and of the frenzied sessions with his team of seamstresses where he draped swaths of fabric on mannequins and live models alike, explaining his vision as he worked. These mesmerizing displays were counter-balanced with the realization that the powers that be were slowly but surely forcing the fashion pioneer into retirement because the couture gowns which he had built his empire upon were no longer earning the funds required to keep the comapany running. Instead, the focus had shifted to ready-to-wear clothing and accessories such as bags, perfumes, scarves and sunglasses.
Producer and Director Matt Tyrnauer – Special Correspondant for Vanity Fair – tells this truly poignant story of the end of an era with incredible cinematography, intimate interviews and even the ocassional comedic relief. My favorite scenes were those including Valentino’s six pugs who do everything from fly in a private jet to participate in a photo shoot.
I strongly suggest this film to all lovers of fashion. It is educational, entertaining and visually stunning. Enjoy!
