Keeping it simple

I was not prepared for our 85 degree weather this past weekend. I hadn’t dragged out all of my summer clothes, and I haven’t even really started my spring shopping, let alone shop for summer. Confronted with a closet full of clothes yet nothing to wear, I relied on my old standby: the white tank. And I was instantly reminded why I keep coming back to this staple again and again.

When the weather is really hot, wearing something complicated and fussy just looks like “too much”. In order to truly look chic, what you put together has to seem effortless. That’s where the white tank comes in. It’s a cinch to accessorize. Wear it with jeans, metallic sandals, and an armful of bangles. Rough it up a bit with a big leather belt and cuff bracelet. Throw a menswear-inspired vest over it. Layer it over/under a colored tank. On a hot day, keep it cool with white linen pants, espadrilles and oversized sunglasses. Pair it with a tiered skirt, cute flip-flops and a hat for a day at the beach. On cooler days, it looks great with summer-weight scarf, dark trouser-style jeans, and platform sandals. The possibilities are endless, and the very basic nature of the tank keeps the outfit simple.

One of the most popular brands of tanks, of course, is the classic Hanes tank. Many women prefer the boys or men’s tanks; I am a bit bustier, so I like the women’s. Of course, you can also find them elsewhere – from $38 for a white tank by Splendid, to $8 for one at Old Navy. But at $9.99 for a package of three, you really can’t beat Hanes.
