The Perfect Denim Fit – Part 2

Last week I wrote about the importance of recognizing which cut and style of jean best suits your body type. This week, I’m going to make it really easy for you by suggesting specific brands and styles. You may notice that I am not recommending any “skinny jeans”. While they are certainly trendy right now and many women carry off this look in a very stylish way, this particular blog is about finding jeans that will make you look THINNER. The fact of the matter is that skinny jeans, even if you are Heidi Klum, are rarely going to actually make you look skinnier. With the skinny jean, it’s essential you have to have the right shoe and the right top in order to avoid looking dumpy, and for many women, that’s too challenging. So, for the sake of this blog, I’m talking about a pair of jeans that require no effort , the kind you can throw on and head out the door in, that will look great no matter what you pair them with.

1. Waist is smaller than hips, creating a huge gap in the back of your jeans: You have two options. The first is to go to a tailor. It’s an incredibly simple thing for them to fix, and for around $10, I think it’s well worth it. Your second option is Joe’s Jeans, “The Honey”. This style was specifically created to address this issue. The jean is cut roomier in the hips and tailored in the waist.

2. Big stomach, skinny legs: Joe’s Jeans, “The Muse; Paige Premium Denim, “Hollywood Hills”; Red Engine, “Scarlet (style 115), Seven for All Mankind “The Ginger”;”High-Waist Boot-Cut”; Citizens of Humanity, “Amber High Rise”, “Hutton High Rise”. What all of these jeans have in common is that they all have a higher rise – but not too high, as to avoid looking rounder – but are cut slimmer through the leg, with a slight boot cut, thus “holding in” the stomach, while highlighting your legs.

3. Big thighs/hips: Paige Premium Denim, “The Robertson”, “Bundy Wide Leg”; AG Jeans “The Club”; Citizens of Humanity, “The Faye”, J Brand “LoveStory, 22″; Seven for all Mankind, “Low-Rise Ginger”, Hudson Jeans, “Flare”. These styles are all a low to mid rise, with a wide leg or flare, which balances out the width of your hips and camouflages your thighs.

4. No curves, boyish figure: Citizens of Humanity, “The Kelly”; Hudson Jeans, “Anchor Boot Cut”; James Jeans “Tom Straight Leg”; True Religion, “Billy”, Blue Cult, “The Gwyneth”; Dylan George, “Stephanie”. These jeans are all a straight leg or modest boot cut, thus creating more of a focus on the hips, creating the illusion of curves.

5. Full figured, all around: Paige Premium Denim, “Hollywood Hills”, Joe’s Jeans, “The Honey”, Svoboda Jeans, “Cate Wide Leg”, IT Jeans, “Dream Diva”, Lucky Brand Jeans “Sweet N Low”. These jeans are all cut a little more generously through the hip/thigh area, with a trouser style leg to balance out hips and thighs. A lower waist also makes the butt appear smaller.

This list barely scratches the surface! But I hope that at the very least, when you are trying on each pair, you’ll see how they fit your body, why they flatter you and how to find similar styles. Happy Shopping!
