I know you’re probably thinking it’s a little bit early to start talking about swimwear, but the May editions of most magazines are dedicated to swim, and those magazines are on stands in April. I was a swimwear editor at one of those magazines when I lived in NYC, and I used to meet with hundreds of swimwear designers to find the best of the best. Even though I don’t have that job anymore, I still get really excited when this time of year rolls around.
One of the styles I’m most excited about this season is the Old Hollywood-esque one piece. This is a style that flatters almost every body type. The strategically placed shirred and gathered fabric really hides the flaws that most of us worry about and just give an overall look of glamour.
Two of my favorites are from Nordstrom. The first is by Juicy Couture. The halter style works for both smaller and larger busts, and the skirted bottom minimizes larger hips. The second is by Miraclesuit, and it is a fabulous plus size option. Miraclesuit makes swimwear for both womens’ sizes and plus sizes. The way that they crisscross and wrap their fabric is pure genious.

I also love Lands’ End for swimwear. They offer a ton of options (short, regular & long torso, D-DDD cup, plus size, among others) so you get a true fit. And their website is very shopper-friendly. They even have a virtual model that you can try the swimwear on before you buy. This style is perfect for almost anyone, and it comes in 6 solid colors, as well as floral and print fabrics.

Some of my favorite swimsuits I’ve gotten over the years are from J Crew. They’re styles are pretty classic, meaning they’ll last from season to season without feeling outdated. I love this simple one piece. It can be worn strapless or with a skinny halter strap. It’s a style that will make a smaller bust seem fuller because of the way the fabric is scrunched at twisted right at the bust.

Stay tuned for Editions 2 & 3 for two-piece and cover up tips.
