As one of the thousands of people who commute to work every day via Boston’s MBTA system, I understand completely that it’s not practical to wear stilettos en route to the office. In addition to the pain of walking 10 blocks in 4 inch heels, there is also the risk of twisting your ankle while navigating the cobblestone sidewalks, and the damage your shoes suffer from the constant pavement pounding and the ubiquitous grime in the subway station. However, that doesn’t mean you still can’t look chic and sophisticated while you’re doing the commute. While ballet flats are very cute, they don’t provide any arch support and can be just as painful as walking the distance in heels. Sometimes, only a sneaker will do. But we’re not talking about giant aerobic sneakers a la Melanie Griffith in “Working Girl”. A simple, sleek, lifestyle sneaker will provide the comfort you need without landing you on the back pages of Glamour magazine with a black bar over your eyes. I like these ones from Puma – they’re clean and modern, and won’t add extra bulk to your silhouette. Pair them with one of the colorful spring trench coats featured in the previous post, and you’re good to go!
Now, for the second problem: once you have the sneakers on, your pants drag on the ground. This one aggravates me the most. Even when I roll my pants, they inevitably unroll 2 blocks later. That’s why I was so excited to discover a wonderful product called zakkers. Zakkers are strips of flexible fabric, with two very strong magnets at the end. You simply cuff the pants, attach one strip on each side of your leg, and viola! No more dragging! Visit www.zakkerz.com to order.
